Activists of the Zopadipatti Bachao Parishad, which had convinced Maharashtra chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh that the forest department had erred in demolishing these hutments two years ago, were garlanded. The hutment dwellers had raised more than a lakh of rupees for the Parishad to acquire maps and land records to fight their case. The demolition which began in April 2000 was part of a massive drive by the forest department to evict squatters on the fringes the National Park from Borivli to Malad. After two years struggle by the Parishad, Mr Deshmukh admitted in the presence of revenue and forest officials that the forest department had razed hutments on nearly 200 acres which did not belong to it.
