Following the Supreme Court's approval, the Sri Lankan government will resume its drought relief program in the Moneragala district of Uva Province from Monday. The program carried out by the Ministry of Economic Development distributes Rs. 2,500 as drought relief to the people in the districts severely hit by the long drought. The assistance will also be distributed in the Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa districts in the North Central Province. Initially the Ministry will resume the distributions in Moneragala district. The program was halted at the request of the Election Commissioner as the Province will hold election on September 20 and the distributions to the people of Moneragala district may be a violation of election law. However, a group of farmers from the Moneragala District filed a Fundamental Rights petition in the Supreme Court claiming that the Government's decision to halt the program was unfair and the Supreme Court Friday gave permission to the government to resume the program without any political interference The court instructed the government to carry out the relief distribution without any political interference and ordered the Moneragala District Secretary to avoid involving any candidates or political party representatives in the process. The Secretary to the Ministry of Economic Development Dr. Nihal Jayathilake assured that the distribution of drought relief assistance will be carried without making any impact in the election process.
