Sri Lanka's environmentalists warn of extinction of crocodiles due to human action

Sri Lanka's environmentalists say that the people of certain areas of the island tend to catch the crocodiles and hand over them to the Wildlife Department.
Environmental lawyer Jagath Gunawardena says that the some incidents of mysterious deaths of crocodiles also had been reported, especially in Nilwala River of Matara district. The environmentalists suspect of poisoning behind the deaths of the crocodiles.
The incidents of harming crocodiles increased in recent times as a number of persons were either killed or injured by man-eating crocodiles, according to the environmentalists.
The 'Geta Kimbula' or Crocodile Porosus, which is found in Nilwala River is a species categorized in Red List by World Association for Conservation as a species threatened of extinction.
After the death of a school girl in Akuressa area of Matara distsrict recently due to a crocodile in the Nilwala River, the wildlife authorities have sponsored catching crocodiles. The crocodiles captured have been released to Yala National Park.
