SSA yet to touch 14,389 child labourers at Golaghat

In entire Golaghat district, including Dhansiri, Bokakhat and Golaghat subdivision, thousands of child labourers are busy in the struggle for a livelihood by working in hotels, restaurants, garages, tea gardens and houses belonged to rich people. In 537 small and big tea gardens, 32 motor garages and 622 hotels of the three subdivisions, child labourers are engaged as workers. After proper investigation, it was found that a total of 9,012 child labourers were working in the tea gardens, 5,327 in hotels and restaurants, and 50 in motor garages. On the other hand, hundreds of children are toiling as domestic servants. These child labourers have been deprived of getting education through Sarbasiksha Mission, which aims to educate the children in order to eradicate illiteracy from the country. The concious people have demanded the SSM to cover such type of child labourers in education. Memo submitted: The All Assam Middle English School Teachers' Association under the leadership of Atul Bora, president of the association and Md Kamaluddin Ahmed, the secretary, submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner of Golaghat district on March 25. The charter of demands in the memorandum included non-release of grants to the recognised schools numbering 120 out of 278 schools, failure to develop infrastructure of schools from the year 2005 till now, immediate release of funds allotted to the 120 schools, and so on. The association expressed concern against the Sarbasiksha Mission. Inspite of giving assurance to the teachers for their all-round development, no infrastructural development had still been undertaken by the SSM. CCRT scholarship: Kabita Kumari Tanti of Amolapatty here received a scholarship from the CCRT of New Delhi. The scholarship will enable the recipient to pursue studies on Lokageet. Kabita Tanti is a wellknown exponent of Lokageet and Sastriya Sangeet. Learning under the guidance of Rumi Saikia of Gandharba Sangeet Mahavidyalaya here, she is a student of class-III at the local Sankardev Sishu Niketan. Birth centenary: Along with other parts of Assam, the birth centenary of Kalaguru Bishnu Prasad Rabha is going to be observed at Dergan on May 24 and 25 at late Noren Sarma Smriti Pather. A public meeting also was held recently under the presidentship of Dr Punyeswar Bora. The meeting decided to organise a seminar which would be conducted by Padmashree Nilamoni Phukan, a reknowned poet of Assam and would be addressed by Indibor Deuri, Hiren Gogoi, Artist, Dilip Sarma, artist singer Sudakhina Sarma. A celebration committee was constituted with 60 members. Dr Arun Borthakur and Prag Bizit Ranjan Saikia were president and secretary respectively. Joimati Divas: Sati Joimati Smriti Divas was celebrated at Kaboru area within Golaghat district with a day-long programme. The programme included flag hoisting, smriti tarpan, painting competition and open meeting. The flag was unfurled by Purna Phuken, a social worker and the smriti tarpan was offered by Jayajyoti Gogoi. The open meeting was inaugurated by Aroti Chetia Phukan, a poet and was conducted by Jayajyoti Gogoi, president of the celebration committee. The meeting was addressed by Upen Dutta, a journalist as an appointed speaker. Sandhya Khataniar and P Phukan. The speakers underlined the contributions of the Mohasati Joymati and urged upon the people to follow the ideals of the martyr. Earlier, Gitima Rajkhowa, secretary of the celebration committee explained the people of the meeting and Nagen Phukan offered the vote of thanks. Hailstorm: A severe hailstorm caused heavy damage to standing crops, besides a huge number of dwelling houses on the night of March 29. The hailstorm lashed more than a hundred villages of greater Golaghat area, including Padumoni, Khumtai, Dhekial, Borkuthoni, Pulibor Betioni, Kochugaon and Chakiting etc. Felicitated: Padmashree, Nitracharja Jotin Goswami was felicitated under the aegis of the Omala Chara, here on March 29 at Ajanta Kala Mandal Bhawan, Golaghat. Coinciding with the day, the Sankari Satriya Nitya workshop was also inaugurated under the aegis of the Sankari Sangeet Vidyapeeth. Kabita Abeli: A
