March 12: Star hotels of the city have also opted for daily power cuts, like malls and multiplexes. The state government has decided to impose a two-day power holiday per week or daily power cuts on star hotels and software companies. Hospitals and diagnostic centres have been exempted from power holiday.
AP transco and Central Discom have started issuing notices to the star hotels for this. The hotels have said that they prefer daily load shedding instead of going without power for two days at a stretch.
Managements of star hotels have, however, decided to negotiate the power cut timings with Central Discom officials.
One star hotel got a notice from Central Discom stating that it would suffer power cuts from 4 pm to 10 pm daily.
This is not acceptable to the management as customers mostly stay in hotels between 6 pm and 9 am.
"We would prefer daily power cuts anytime between 11 am and 6 pm," said the secretary-general of Hotel and Restaurants Association of Andhra Pradesh, Mr Pradeep Kumar Dutt. "We all know that there is shortage of power generation but all hotel managements are worried."
However, the hotel managements have no problems with running generators during power cuts.
"We would certainly prefer daily load relief," said the president of Star Hotels Association, Mr Veer Vijay Singh.
Meanwhile, the Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry has said that industries are suffering heavily because of the power holiday. "The government can help us by subsidising generators and diesel," said the federation president, Mr Suraj Prasad Agarwal
