Friday fury over the controversial Hogenakal project had a filmi twist. The stars literally came down to the streets, as artistes attached to the Kannada film industry converged to protest under the banner of the Karnataka Chalanachitra Udhyama Sangha. The stars and their fans had a common cause to fight for. Demonstrating outside Bangalore's Town Hall, they voiced their demand in unison: The Union government had to intervene and stop the Hogenakal project lest it triggered water scarcity across Karnataka. The police bandobust was tight. But the demonstrators were a peaceful lot. Sporting red and yellow scarves, the film industry crowd raised slogans against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalitha. The drizzle that threatened to shower down was no match for the determined demonstrators. Among them were Parvathamma Rajkumar and her two star sons Punit and Raghavendra, Darshan, Ravichandran, Upendra, Aravind, Ganesh, Sa Ra Govindu, K Manju, stunt-masters Thriller Manju and Jumper Krishna, K C N Chandrashekhar, Chindodi Leela, Pankaja, Balaraj and Joesimon. Parvathamma said her family had always supported the fight for the cause of Karnataka and its people. She recalled the participation of her late husband and Kannada matinee idol Rajkumar in demonstrations for the Kannada cause. She urged the people that the fight should be peaceful as it should not disturb the harmony in the region and the country. Support for bundh The Federation of Karnataka State Lorry Owners And Agents Association said trucks will be off roads on April 10, the Karnataka Bundh day. The Karnataka Pradesh Hotel and Upahara Mandir, Karnataka Nayak Janan-gada Kshemabhivruddhi Sangha and the Kannada Nadu Nudi Rakshana Samithi too extended their support for the bundh. DGP K R Srinivasan will hold talks with leaders of Kannada organisations on Saturday to discuss law and order measures during the bundh.
