West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya admitted in the state Assembly that there was a situation of starvation and poverty at Amlasole in West Midnapore district and the government was trying to improve conditions. He, however, did not say whether the death of five tribals at Amlasole was due to starvation. The remote tribal village hit the headlines last month after reports of five starvation deaths came to the fore, triggering a furore all over the state.
