The Andhra Pradesh State government has shelved the proposal to introduce fees for allowing grazing in the forests. Apprehending resistance from various sectors, the high-power committee set up by the government in one of its meetings held recently turned down the idea of re-introducing grazing fees. The fees, which were collected earlier to regulate grazing in the forests were scrapped in 1968 after a severe drought hit the State. The National Forest Policy, 1988, mooted the regulation of grazing to discourage maintenance of large herds of non-productive livestock.
