State denies subsidy to transporters

The West Bengal government ruled out the possibility of providing any subsidy to commercial operators to purchase new vehicles to conform to Euro I and II emission standards. "The question of providing any kind of subsidy to commercial vehicle operators does not arise. They ply their taxis and buses to make profits. They are not operating an ambulance or a hearse. A senior transport department official said the government may, however, help passenger transport operators obtain loans from banks.
