The Maharashtra Energy Development Agency (MEDA) is making great strides in the field of utilization of solar energy to replace traditional electricity-fueled water heating systems in the state. Nearly 5 megawatts (MW) of energy is produced using this non-conventional source of energy. In 250 villages that are not connected by grid electricity, solar panels are providing hot water. The practice is also growing in areas around Thane and not without reason. "The government has issued a 4% rebate on taxes for any housing society that utilizes solar energy in order to encourage the practice of cutting carbon emissions," said Mahesh Zagade, Director General MEDA. "Solar energy comes under the unlicensed sector and many private individuals have set up solar water heating systems in their housing societies," added Zagade. "Solar water heating systems have great potential and Maharashtra is perhaps the most efficient state in this field," adds Zagade.
