A comprehensive policy for forest and environment has become urgent for States like Assam with rich bio-diversity along with other micro-resources. Situated in one of the twenty major bio-diversity spots in the world, this part of the country could boast once for it being blessed with such variety of flora and fauna which made it globally known. It is disquieting to learn from remote sensing data that the State lost forest cover of 2.80 lakh hectatres till January 2001 and that Sonitpur district was the worst affected.
