The two-month-old United Parliamentary Forum (UPF) Government of Meghalaya is yet to take a stand on the controversial issue of commercial mining of uranium by the Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) at Domasiat in the West Khasi Hill district of the state. Four years of survey and explortation by the Atomic Mineral Division (AMD) had revealed that a high-grade, near-surface deposit of about 9,500 tonnes of uranium oxide is spread in Domasiat and its surrounding areas. With the AMD explorations now over, the stage is set for the UCIL to step in for commercial mining of the precious mineral.
