Chief Minister Oommen Chandy visited Lalur, the Thrissur Corporation's waste disposal site, on Tuesday. He arrived at the site around 2.30 p.m. “What are the problems here?” he asked the people who gathered there. “A few problems are being looked into. No major issue,” said corporation health standing committee chairman C. S. Sreenivasan. Congress and Youth Congress workers had gathered in large numbers and the Chief Minister could not get into the premises of the waste processing centre. A group of local residents appealed to him to study the alleged environmental and health problems caused by unscientific waste management. “The water sources here are polluted. Rain worsens the situation,” a woman said. The Chief Minister suggested use of landfill technology. The members of the Lalur Malineekarana Virudha Samara Samithi objected to this. “The decisions taken at a high-level meeting held in Thiruvananthapuram, chaired by you, should be implemented first,” said T. K. Vasu, Samithi chairman. Later, the Chief Minister told mediapersons that the problems at Lalur were not isolated. “Many regions of the State face waste management problems. The demands of Lalur residents are just,” he said. He said that the State did not have a successful model for waste management. “A few models have come up before the government. Experts are studying them. The government will adopt a model soon,” he said.
