State Highways to be upgraded

DH News Service, Bangalore: The Union Minister of State for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways K H Muniyappa on Saturday said the National Highway Authority of India, (NHAI) has identified key highways and roads in the State to be upgraded under phases 2 and 3 of the National Highway Development Project, (NHDP). Speaking to reporters after reviewing works at the elevated highway on Hosur Road here, the minister said the stretches in Karnataka that have been identified for improvement under phase IV A of the NHDP include the Chitradurga-Shimoga (NH13), Shimoga-Mangalore (NH13) and Gundlupet-Mysore-Kollegal (NH212). "Under the Golden Quadrilateral project, four laning of 590 kms in the State have been completed, with only 34 kms in the process of being four laned. Phase 2 and 3 including the Chitradurga and Tumkur by-pass will also be completed in time,' he said. In the New Mangalore Port Connectivity project, 11.6 kms of four laning has been completed by NHAI and efforts are on to complete the remaining work at an early date. The standing finance committee of the ministry has also approved an estimate of Rs 36.56 crore for the Kabini Bridge, he added. The minister also added that Rs 12 crore has been allocated to the railways to construct open vents for the railway bridge at K R Puram. Replying to queries from reporters on the bad condition of national highways, Mr Muniyappa said heavy trucks loaded with iron ore are to be blamed. "No roads or highways will withstand the load carried by lorries. The question of introduction of a user toll fee has to be decided by the State,' he said.
