KOLKATA, 3 OCT: The state government is considering a proposal to set up underground car park in the city for smooth flow of traffic. A meeting to discuss the matter was held at Writers' Buildings last week. Beside the ministers senior officers of city police attended the meeting. Senior police officers said smooth flow of traffic in the central business hub has become very difficult because of parking of vehicles on two sides of the road. Traffic movement becomes slow on Ganesh Chandra Avenue, Hare Street, Strand Road, Kalakar Street, Kalikrishna Tagore Street, Jamunalal Bajaj Street due to parking of vehicles in the morning and afternoon. Parking of vehicles on several streets in south and central Kolkata at night is posing a serious threat as in case of fire it will be difficult for fire tenders to reach the venue because of parking. Thousands of taxis are parked on Harish Mukherjee Road, Dr Rajendra Road, Nandan Road, Allenby Road, Hesham Road and its neighbourhood at night. To resolve the issue one of the remedies would be underground car park. Senior police officers maintained that the chief minister and other ministers insist that traffic flow should improve but this is not possible unless steps are taken to clear the roads. It may be recalled that in mid-2000 the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) had proposed to give additional FAR to the builders who would agree to set up parking lot for cars of public. But that proposal did not mature as the builders did not show interest. The underground parking lots opposite Writers' Buildings and at New Market are still not fully utilised. The parkomat at Rawdon Street is not used to the maximum.
