The Karnataka Government today rejected outright the "comprehensive formula' recommended by the Cauvery Monitoring Committee (CMC) after an expert group failed to thrash out a solution to the vexed problem of water-sharing between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu during drought period. While the "comprehensive formula' enjoins on Karnataka to release 31 tmc of water to Tamil Nadu, Karnataka presented its own formula which assessed a total shortage of 9.5 tmc of water. However, sources said that the "comprehensive formula' would ultimately be forced on Karnataka after the CMC sends the proposal to the Cauvery River Authority (CRA) headed by Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee for a final decision.
