The Assam State Public Works Department (PWD) is set to implement a World Bank-sponsored US $ 200-million project, which is expected to give a complete facelift to whole road network of State Highways (SHs) and Major District Roads (MDRs). The State at present has 1,479 km of State Highways and 6,280 km of Major District Roads. The total road network in the State encompasses a length of 41,333 km, including 32,427 km of rural roads. Most of the road network is poorly developed, has major deficiencies, and has been subjected to several years of neglect. The project, called the Assam State Roads Project, will also cover the cost of conversion of 651 of the 5,000-odd existing timber bridges into RCC bridges, besides construction of missing bridges.
