MUMBAI: In the wake of scarcity of complex fertilizers creating unrest among farmers, the state government has decided to ask the Maharashtra Agro-Industries Development Corporation to help overcome the crisis. The scarcity has been created owing to global market conditions. "The state government had demanded 9 lakh tonnes of complex fertilizers forthe kharif 2009 season, but since they are in short supply, we may get about 4.50 lakh tonnes," principal secretary, agriculture, N B Patil said, adding that the MAIDC had been asked to mix fertilizers to overcome the crisis. The state's overall requirement forall kinds of fertilizers for kharif 2009 is to the tune of 35.35 lakh tonnes that includes 14.25 lakh tonnes of Urea, 5.50 lakh tonnes of Di-Ammonium Phosphate (DAP) and Muriate of Potash (MOP) and 9 lakh tonnes of complex fertilizers. However, the supply of complex NPK fertilizers has been affected as manufacturers are not producing enough. Patil said, "More and more farmers are preferring complex fertilizers in which each granule contains the exact quantity of the various elements required, We have asked MAIDC to process and provide complex NPKfertilizers to the farmers."
