The chairman of the state pollution control board (PCB), Mr AN Basu today complained to the chief minister, Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, about state government-run hospitals not following norms required for the discharge and disposal of medical wastes. Speaking at a programme organised by the PCB to celebrate the World Environment Day, Mr Basu said: "We have set up common medical waste treatment facilities but I have to tell the chief minister that some of the state government hospitals are not adhering to these disposal norms.' Mr Bhattacharjee however, did not comment on the matter during his speech. Meanwhile, a PCB official on conditions of anonymity pointed out there was a need to improve the house-management system of the state government hospitals. Amongst the city hospitals, discharge of bio-medical wastes by the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital was the most satisfactory. "We are trying to formulate a policy whereby we will consider the discharge and segregation procedure of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital as a model one and then ask other hospitals to follow the same. However, some other compliance need to be adhered to before we can decide on such a model,' the official said. A substantial improvement in the in-house management procedures of the SSKM has come over after the department hauled them up for non-compliance of discharge norms, the official said. However, the situation in Calcutta Medical College and Hospital has been found to be the worse. He claimed that till a few days back the hospital had two coal operated boilers even though the use of these boilers were banned in the state on environmental grounds. Meanwhile, in the districts, a state government-run hospital in Uluberia, the Uluberia Sub Divisional Hospital, was recently pulled up for non-compliance. Notices were sent and things were sorted out only after the district magistrate intervened. n SNS
