The Maharashtra state forest department has asked the supreme court for more time to settle the problem of encroachments on forest land in view of the hardship evictions would cause to the encroachers of whom 73000 are tribals. Based on orders from the apex court, the Union ministry of environment and forests had issued orders earlier this year that all encroahments on forest land in the country must be removed by September -end.
