BHUBANESWAR: The State Government has sought a report from the Chhattisgarh Government on the likely impact of diversion weir under construction on the lower stream of Indravati and Bhaskel rivers on the bordering villages of Kossamguda block in Nabarangpur district. The Chhattisgarh Government is constructing a diversion weir at Burgaon in Bokahand block of Bastar district which is barely 200 meters from Orissa border. Following protest from the people of the bordering villages, a team of engineers of Water Resources Department visited the site to assess the likely impact on nearby villages and agriculture land. Water Resources Secretary Suresh Chandra Mohapatra said the preliminary information collected by the team of engineers stated that the proposed height of the diversion weir is two meters and width 100 meters. Chhattisgarh engineers told the team that there will be no adverse impact of the weir on Orissa side. But the team is not sure about its impact during high flood. Mohapatra has discussed the matter with his Chhattisgarh counterpart Sunil Kujur and requested the later to submit a detailed report on the project which he agreed. The State Government can assess the likely adverse impact of the project on the bordering villages in this side after studying the report, he said.
