Providing impetus:Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin giving away grant to CETPs in Tirupur on Sunday. COIMBATORE: The State Government had made a series of efforts to find a permanent solution to the effluent problem in Tirupur, Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said at Tirupur on Sunday. Giving away Rs.150 crore of the Rs.320 crore grant from the Central and State Governments to the Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETPs) in Tirupur for Zero Liquid Discharge systems, he said that Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi made several representations to the Central Government on the problems faced by the Tirupur knitwear units. The State Government said it would give Rs.120 crore grant for the CETPs for zero liquid discharge. The Union Government allocated Rs.200 crore in the 2010-2011 Budget for it. The knitwear sector in Tirupur competed with countries such as China, Bangladesh and Pakistan. The town had over 700 dyeing and bleaching units. As many as 20 CETPS were established for zero liquid discharge. Union Textiles Minister Dayanidhi Maran said about 60 per cent of India's knitwear exports were from Tirupur. The Knitwear Technology Mission would help the knitwear industry in Tirupur find work throughout the year by diversifying to other fibres too. It was now mostly cotton-dependent and hence, had work for only nine months a year. He assured that cotton exports would be permitted only after meeting the domestic needs. In the coming weeks, yarn prices would reduce. If not, the Central and State Governments would intervene. Union Minister of State for Textiles Panabaaka Lakshmi said the grant given for the CETPs would go a long way for the economic viability of the knitwear sector. The Minister urged the industry to make use of all the schemes for the economic development of the region. Minister for Handloom and Textiles K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran said that the grant given to the CETPs would help Noyyal farmers get unpolluted water. Textiles Secretary Rita Menon said apart from the grant for the CETPs, the Knitwear Technology Mission, Skill Development Initiative for the knitwear sector and Common Compliance Code for apparel exports were launched at Tirupur on Sunday. Tirupur MLA C. Govindasamy appealed to the government to procure cotton from the farmers and supply to the textile mills. This would help bring down the raw material prices. He appealed to the State Government to supply power to the CETPs at a concessional price.
