Rahul Mangaonkar | TNN Ahmedabad: Last year, Gujarat released 4.86 tonnes of green house gases (GHG) against every lakh rupee worth of produce that contributed to its economy. This puts it at 10th rank in the country where emission intensity of economy is concerned. It stood a wee bit better than the national average of 5.07 tonne, 20 per cent better than Andhra Pradesh, but worse than Karnataka and Maharashtra. The top five states in terms of gross domestic product (GDP) intensity of emissions are Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh. Significant emissions from these states are embedded in coal, steel or electricity produced by them, but consumed outside these states. The power sector has the largest carbon footprint on India
