The state Assembly’s Standing Committee on Forest & Environment, while inspecting the secondary steel units in and around Durgapur, caught one unit flouting the West Bengal Pollution Control Board norms and ordered the authority to install devices to check air pollution immediately.
The Standing Committee headed by Mr Srikanta Mahato is visiting the Asansol – Durgapur industrial zone for a two-day inspection tour to examinse adherence to environment pollution norms, particularly those relating to air pollution, on the part of the industrial units here.
The committee visited six units in Durgapur today; tomorrow it will visit eight units in Asansol. Mr Mahato said: “Most of the units are observing the norms prescribed by the WBPCB but one unit, we found had not installed an electrostatic precipitator, a device used to minimise air pollution.” The unit, Haldia Steels in Angadpur-Raturia industrial complex, has been accused of causing extensive air pollution by releasing Suspended Particulate Materials (SPM) in large quantities, causing severe inconvenience to the localities adjacent to the industrial complex.
Mr Mahato said: “We have cautioned them to install the device at the earliest or face harsh action by the state government.” The committee comprising MLAs Mr Dibakar Hansda, Mr Amjad Hossen and Mr Jayanta Naskar was accompanied by officials of the WBPCB while inspecting the factories.
The Committee members also spoke to the local villagers and took their opinion about the magnitude of pollution in the area.
