Sterlite gas leak case: Green Tribunal orders constitution of expert panel

The National Green Tribunal has ordered the constitution of an expert committee to inspect Sterlite Copper smelting unit in Tuticorin. The four-lakh-tonne unit cannot start commercial production but the systems can be turned on to enable the Committee check the emission safety systems. Immediately after inspection the unit is to be closed. The Tribunal Judge M Chokkalingam passed the interim order on an appeal by the Vedanta Group company against an order of closure issued by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board. The unit was closed on March 30 following complaints of gas leakage on March 23. The expert committee is to submit its report to the Tribunal on April 29. The committee will include two experts and one representative each from the TNPCB and Sterlite, the Judge said.
