Ritu Khatri & Yagnesh Gosai | TNN Ahmedabad: This is not Europe, but a sight from the suburbs around the city Drive into Shilaj, Ghuma, Manipur and Godhavi areas which are seen as promising localities realty-wise, and you will find huge white mass of foam floating on the road or embedded in the bushes, looking like snow. This seemingly innocuous mass is actually froth generated from semi-treated sewage effluent that flows into a channel passing by these areas. The channel flows from Gandhinagar through these areas via Gota-Godhavi irrigation canal, which was meant to irrigate neighbouring villages. At the slightest breeze, huge balls of foam fly into homes or settle on cars and window panes in the housing societies around here, causing a stench. An advocate from Shan Bungalows in Shilaj, Niranjana Kapasi says, "Every two days, the Jaspur treatment plant in Gandhinagar pumps semi-treated water into the canal, causing huge balls of foam to roll onto windowpanes and doors of houses and cars. We have 425 bungalows in Shilaj itself where around 6,000 people are affected by this menace. We have to shut our doors early in the evening and open them only after late morning due to bad odour". Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) member secretary RG Shah says, "We will send out our regional officer to the location for an assessment. It is basically sewerage water released by Jaspur plant that flows through the canal. If the water does not meet basic standards we will take action."
