Storm kills one, destroys 3000 houses in Jalpaiguri

A storm in Jalpaiguri district killed one person and destroyed around 3,000 houses, while sending normal life out of gear in many blocks last night.
According to administrative sources, around 400 families were rendered homeless after roofs of their houses were blown away.
Many blocks, mainly in the Alipurduar sub division, were severely hit. Maynaguri and Dhupguri blocks were affected partly in the Jalpaiguri sadar sub-division.
One Manu Thakur, 20, died after a tree fell on him in the Madarihat block last evening, sources said.
Thousands of trees were uprooted in forest areas, and the National Highway-31 was blocked after several trees fell on the road at different places.
Some offices of the forest department were also damaged by the storm. Watch towers of both the forest department and border guards including in the Indo-Bhutan border, were also damaged.
Power service was disrupted across Jalpaiguri district after electric poles fell and high-tension overhead cables snapped at some places.
The district administration is estimating loses of properties of the government departments and common people.
The administration would send report on houses damaged partly and fully to the state government to provide assistance to the needy families.
Though blocked roads were cleared, the electricity was yet to be restored in the affected areas.
The storm lashed into Jalpaiguri areas and hit mainly Madaraihat and Kumargram areas since last evening. The hailstorm also affected some areas including the tea plantations in the Dooars.
