Storm wreaks havoc in Assam, 6 dead, 50 hurt

A thunderstorm followed by heavy rain wreaked havoc in Assam late Saturday night, claiming six lives and injuring at least 50 across the state. Officials said Nagaon district with three deaths was the worst-hit. Three others, one each in Guwahati, Goalpara and Dhubri districts, died in the storm, that damaged hundreds of huts, uprooted trees, electric poles and choked traffic on highways. A heaving Brahmaputra threatened to devour swathes of human habitation as the squall left a trail of devastation. Officials said Rumi Begum (20), a Guwahati-resident, died after a truck overturned under the impact of the storm and crushed her to death.
