Scientists are against a government move to bring about wide-ranging restrictions in the use of animals in pharmaceutical research. They fear if the rules by the Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals (CPCSEA) are gazetted, research into new vaccines and new drugs in Indian industries and laboratories will be hampered.Ranbaxy had had probelms with government regulations while importing beagle dogs for research purposes. A consignment of dogs was quarantined before elaborate documentation was provided for their clearance.
