An undersea earthquake measuring 6.3 points on the Richter scale struck the south-east Aegean island of Rhodes today, the Institute of Geodynamics at the National Observatory of Athens said. The US Geological Survey said earlier the quake measured 6.4 at a depth of 68 kilometres and 147 kilometres south-west of Mugla, Turkey. The tremor was recorded at 6.26am (1326 AEST) with the epicentre located 445 kilometres south of the island. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. "The quake has the power to create a small tsunami but this possibility is reduced if its epicentre was at a great depth," seismologist Efthymios Lekkas told state Net television. Half of all European tremors each year are recorded in Greece. AFP
