Study to analyse migration impact

In a bid to collect data on Migration from Goa as well as into the State, NRI Affairs Department in collaboration with the Centre for Development Studies, the Department of Planning and Statistics, of the Government of Goa and the Xavier Centre of Historical research will conduct Goa Migration Monitoring Study. Disclosing this at a press conference, the NRI Commissioner Eduardo Faleiro said that the purpose of the study is to collect data on migration from and into Goa and analyze its impact on the social and economic situation of the State. "The study will report on the demographic, social and economic characteristics of our emigrants, impact of migration on social sectors such as education and health and will contain special reports on the elderly, women and children left behind,' he said. Further, he said, the study will also address the problems encountered by emigrants in the countries of their destination. "A comprehensive survey of households throughout Goa will be conducted to measure the volume of migration and to analyse its socio-economic consequences,' he stated. Faleiro said the Centre for Development Studies is an autonomous research centre funded by the Government of India and is based in Kerala. It is one of the foremost institutes for development of economics in the country. "The study is expected to be completed within this year,' he said. Meanwhile, Faleiro informed that the department has received several requests for information about investment opportunities in Goa. "The Government, at our instance, has appointed a nodal officer in the Directorate of Industries to assist NRIs willing to invest in Goa,' he said adding "to provide further facilities to Goan expatriates, we have now decided to establish an Overseas Goan Facilitation Centre in partnership with the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs (MOIA) and the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII).' Senior officials of MOIA and of the CII will visit Goa to finalise this arrangement, he said.
