Submerged Bahraich sets up schools in tents

Tarannum Manjul Even as the overflowing Ghaghra river is creating havoc for school going children in Bahraich, the district administration has ensured that children in the 219 flood affected villages do not miss their classes. In a novel initiative, the district administration has set up schools in specially created tents, supported by UNICEF, to ensure that the session does not take a long break. According to officials, the floods in the district have resulted in an over two months-long break in the session. Bahraich, which has been marked as one of the worst flood affected districts by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), has 4.25 lakh children studying in primary and upper primary schools. Every year, some 400 schools get affected due to floods between August and September, and the session is resumed in these schools only by late October. In Mahsi, which is the worst affected block in the district, the Bahraich administration has set up 10 primary and upper primary schools in tents. The Indian Express visited some of these schools, where not only were the classes being held regularly, but even mid-day meals were being prepared. While earlier children remained absent during the flood period, this year the specially set up relief schools have ensured nearly 60 per cent attendance. Pradeep Kumar Mishra, a teacher, said,
