LUCKNOW: The sugarcane farmers in UP continued to agitate against state and Central governments cane purchase prices. While some farmers set afire documents and furnitures of a sugar mill office in Muzaffarnagar and forced other factories to suspend their work, in Sultanpur, farmers blocked the roads in protest. Farmers, led by Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Manju Devi Tikait gheraoed the office of a sugar mill at Sisoli in Muzaffarnagar and set the documents and furnitures on fire. Receipt of payments made to farmers was burnt in Lohari. Meanwhile, 15 sugar mills which had reopened could not carry out any processing work as they were short of sugarcane due to ongoing agitation. The work was also hit in Meerut, Saharanpur, Bijnor and Bulandshahr. Canegrowers in UP are demanding Rs 280 per quintal rate, while state government has fixed Rs 180-185 per quintal as State Advisory Price (SAP) and Union government has fixed Rs 130 per quintal as Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) for sugarcane purchase. The protest continued despite a resolution passed by a section of farmers led by VM Singh, convener of the Rashtriya Kisan Mazdoor Sangathan and Congress leader, in Lakhimpur Kheri, that they will supply sugarcane to mills and fix the rate later. The farmers, however, laid a condition that sugar mills will have to pay at par with the highest payment made by any other sugar mill in UP. Farmers said that they need to vacate fields for sowing of wheat. Also, the cane leaves will help in meeting shortage of cattle fodder. Farmers said that their conditions have been accepted by the officials of Balarayan and Sampoornanagar factories. They also decided to suspend agitation till December 15.
