ROURKELA: Although no swine flu has been reported from any part of the Sundargarh district, the veterinary officials are taking all measures in the wake of pig raising and pork eating habits of the tribal population.
Pigs are raised by tribals and Dalits as they are both source of revenue and edible meat. Pork is preferred by them as it comes cheaper than chicken and mutton. Sources said the approximate pig population of the district is nearly a lakh. Awareness meetings among officials have been conducted in the headquarters of Panposh, Sundargarh and Bonai sub-divisions and blood samples of pigs are being collected since May 7. Thirty samples have so far been sent for testing and 70 more have been collected from Bonai and parts of Rourkela. Stand-in Chief District Veterinary Officer Pravat Mohanty said the district is unlikely to get the swine flu virus as it does not import pigs but still they are on alert.
