Transportation of illegal minerals in Haryana also stopped The Supreme Court on Monday stopped illegal mining in the villages of Kota, Gangani, Sarai, Mohammadpur and Kharag Jalalpur in Mewat district of Haryana, taking note of the report submitted by the Central Empowered Committee about large-scale illegal mining taking place in these areas. A Bench of Justices K.S. Radhakrishnan and C.K. Prasad, while prohibiting mining operations, also stopped transportation of illegal minerals. The Bench, after hearing counsel K. Parameshwar for the Committee, restrained establishment of new stone crushers. Notice issued It issued notice to the State of Haryana, Mewat District Collector, District Superintendent of Police and Mewat Deputy Commissioner and called for their response on the CEC report. In its report, the CEC said: “The presence of a large number of stone-crushers acts as an incentive for illegal mining. It is necessary that establishment and functioning of stone-crushers is strictly regulated and without which any effective control on illegal mining may not be feasible.” Besides seeking a direction to curb illegal mining, the CEC also wanted the Court to prohibit movement of vehicles carrying mineral from the mining lease and vehicles found involved in illegal transportation confiscated. Exemplary action urged The report said the CEC found non-forestry use of about 15 acres of land falling under village Raisina in Gurgaon district; 4,560 trees had been removed illegally in that area and the ground had been levelled. The Committee wanted exemplary action to ensure that blatant violations do not take place in future.
