Inspection of a mega housing project in Grande-Vanelilm in Colva has revealed that a well shown on the survey plan has ceased to exist on the ground, while storm water drain leading to a water pond stands filled up with mud. What's more, the inspection report read out by Panchayat Secretary, Rajendra Naik in the presence of Sarpanch Suzie Fernandes revealed that land filling has taken place, including the filling up of a ghairo (cowdung pond). The inspection was conducted as per last Sunday's gram Sabha meeting following a complaint lodged by Reena Fernandes and Menino Fernandes. A retaining wall of 3.5 meters height has been built, resulting in blocking of the access to the paddy fields. In his inspection report, the secretary said that a pond has been filled up with mud mixed with garbage, while the retaining wall has allegedly encroached into the field. Though the well has ceased to exist, two wells have been sunk, besides a toilet close to the well. Meanwhile, the Convenor of Colva Civic and Consumer Forum Judith Almeida has said other illegalities will be inspected by the Panchayat at a later date as informed by the Sarpanch. She said the existing well and a "pand' water way has been buried, while a pond is partially buried with mixed garbage. She demanded to know how the people will take their cattle to the fields when the the access is blocked.' These are questions that should be answered by the authorities', she said, whiled requesting the Panchayat body to inspect the height of the building, besides demanding an inquiry into the water supply to the mega project. --HR Almeida said the matter has been taken up at the gram Sabha meeting, but the mundcars have not been settled till date.
