Sustaining agriculture (Editorial)

Declining agricultural productivity and the increasing demand for foodgrains have emerged as a big challenge before the country. Barring a few states, the production level of agriculture in most of the states has either been static or gone down. In many cases, overuse of chemical fertilisers has adversely affected soil quality, leading to stagnation of yield. With the country's population curve still going up at a rapid pace, the situation is indeed serious, and calls for adequate technological intervention for ensuring a sustained growth of the agriculture sector. The agricultural scenario in Assam has also been plagued by a number of constraints, with low productivity being a major problem. Recurring heavy damages to crops by the annual floods apart, erosion and conversion of cropland for other purposes have caused a gradual shrinkage of agricultural land.
