The district administration in Shahkot (Jalandhar) has approached high-level state authorities to control the discharge from the Bhakra dam into the Sutlej river even as dozens of villages downstream of the river, in Nawanshshar and Jalandhar districts, are threatened. Moreover, the erratic and increased water discharge from the dam has caused breaches at many places. Even as the administration has launched preventive mesures on a war footing, hundreds of acres of standing crops along the river have been damaged in many villages. No loss of life, however, has been reported so far. Many places along the river's banks have been breached and the river's gushing waters now threaten the Dhussi bund.
