The Tamil Nadu State Forest Department has handed over saplings under the Union Pollution Control Board-funded 'Greenbelt abetment programme for pollution' to the Chennai Corporation. The civic body will plant the remaining 35,000 saplings. The department took up the programme last year, proposing to plant 1.30 lakh saplings in the city and its suburbs. However, it fell short of the target, planting only 95,000 saplings.
