The talks held here on Wednesday between the Thrissur Corporation and the Lalur Malineekarana Viruddha Samara Samithi to solve garbage issue in the city failed to yield any result. The garbage disposal from the city had been hit since last January after residents of Lalur, the garbage disposal site of Thrissur Corporation, blocked dumping of waste following a major fire at the dumping yard. Mayor I.P. Paul urged the Samara Samithi leaders to cooperate with the civic body to dispose of the garbage from the city. “For the last five months, the corporation has not dumped any garbage at Lalur. But the situation cannot be continued like this. Delay in garbage disposal may lead to serious health hazards in the city,” he said. But the Lalur Samara Samithi reiterated its stand that unless the accumulated garbage from the dumping yard was removed, they will not allow dumping of more waste at Lalur. Raghunath Kuzhungil, vice-chairman of the Samara Samithi said that at a high-level meeting convened by the Chief Minister, the corporation had promised to open more decentralised garbage treatment plants in the city. The delay in setting up decentralised plants has showed the corporation’s insensitivity towards the sufferings of the Lalur residents, he said. The Mayor said the corporation had already opened a biogas plant at the Sakthan Thampuran fish market. “We are in the process of setting up a vegetable waste processing plant on 30 cents of land at Sakthan vegetable market. The project has been submitted for approval. We hope to finish its work in three months. The corporation has also started distribution of pipe compost units to household,” he said. With these initiatives, the corporation can reduced the volume of garbage generated in the city considerably, the Mayor said. The Samara Samithi, however, insisted on removal of the accumulated garbage before resuming dumping at Lalur.
