KISHAPU Municipal Council has managed to reduce the impact of drought by empowering communities in affected areas with capacity building skills as well as facilitate projects that both increase their income and conserve the environment. The projects being undertaken by Disaster Management Unit under the Prime Minister's Office has made it possible to make sure the district is free from drought that was caused by land mismanagement. Coordinator of Disaster Management in Kishapu district, Mr Ponsian Kuhabwa said three wards of Mwamalasa, Masanga and Langana have made it possible to change the lifestyles of the community. He said the project has been a success since the wards were among areas affected by drought and the people were in poor condition since they could not engage in agricultural activities as their crops were dying midway. Mr Kuhabwa said under the project, they have formed ten groups which were trained and empowered to start projects in livestock, agriculture and tree planting meant for environment preservation. "Msanga group with ten members was given 50 goats and 50 chicken but for the time being they are having 200 each, which is a step forward," he said. He added that they have also empowered them with the needed farming knowledge and they are now cultivating yams, horticulture, and sorghum among others. He said the project has helped to improve their welfare as they are now assured of food security and an increase in their income as well. One of the beneficiaries, Ms Magreth William from Masanga village commended the project saying it has transformed their lives and they are now assured of reliable food for consumption and the extra is being sold for financial gains. "Before the project it was difficult to undertake farming, as the crops were not growing as expected due to drought and people incurred more losses thus they shied away from agriculture," she said. The project is supported by the World Bank and supervised by UNICEF under the Disaster Management Unit Coordination and it is meant to strengthening climate information and early warning systems in Tanzania for climate resilient development and adaptation to climate change.
