The government has decided to set up a high level Task Force in the near future, to consider the feasibility of interlinking all major rivers to create a National River Network (NRN). The announcement, made on Wednesday by Water Resources minister Arjun Charan Sethi, follows a Supreme Court directive in October, which asked the Government to immediately constitute a Task Force to link all major rivers in the country by 2012. A Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Water Resources will provide guidance for devising suitable mechanism for bringing about a consensus among States to start work on the NRN.
