Bangalore: The government is planning to constitute a task force, which will be entrusted with the protection and conservation of around 150 lakes in the limits of BBMP, Bangalore Urban and Rural districts, Excise Minister Katta Subramanya Naidu said on Wednesday. Presently these lakes come under the jurisdiction of Lake Development Authority, Bangalore Development Authority, Minor Irrigation Department and Zilla Panchayat limits. Speaking to reporters, after holding a meeting of government officials, Naidu, who is also Bangalore Urban In-charge minister, said the government will take strict action against those encroaching lake beds. He said the government has already taken up the task of drilling borewells to mitigate any drinking water crisis in Bangalore, especially in the newly added areas of BBMP. Sandhya Suraksha Naidu said officials have been directed to identify as many as 56,000 beneficiaries under the Sandhya Suraksha (old age pension) in BBMP limits within the next two months. While the scheme was announced last year, carelessness on the part of the officials during President's rule had resulted in the programme being sidelined. Only 1,074 beneficiaries had been identified in Bangalore so far, he said. Naidu said officials have also been directed to monitor Madilu scheme (delivery kits) and Bhagyalakshmi scheme (insurance cum educational benefit programme for the girl child in a time bound manner).
