Tax cut to power energy-saving gadgets

Sushmi Dey NEW DELHI THE next time you plan to buy an electrical appliance such as a refrigerator or a TV set, think of a more energy-efficient product as you would not only save money on electricity bills, but also on your purchase. The government is working on various models to provide a tax advantage to consumers on energy-efficient electrical appliances. The government may introduce a differential tax structure under which appliances certified as more energy efficient would attract lower tax. This means if you buy a five-star rated refrigerator, you are likely to pay less tax than if you buy a four or a three-star one. The idea is to manage energy demand by promoting the development and use of clean technologies among people.
