Kadapa, Aug. 9: The Telugu Desam (TD) president, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, alleged that the government was taking land from the poor in the name of establishing Special Economic Zones (SEZs) and demanded the release of a white paper on SEZs.
Speaking to newsmen at Potladurthy in Yerraguntla mandal in Kadapa district on Saturday, he said the white paper should include details on purchase of land in various parts of the state, their market rate, amount paid to farmers, fees paid in registrar offices and allocation of lands.
Mr Naidu alleged that the state government was not even following the directives of the UPA chairperson, Mrs Sonia Gandhi, that land should not be obtained from ayacut farmers for establishment of SEZs. The TD president said it was ridiculous on the part of the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, to say that farmers, who lost their land, would be rehabilitated in a better way.
Mr Naidu demanded that the state government, which was saying that land acquired for SEZs was being paid higher compensation than the market rate, reveal the rate at which the land was sold to various companies.
He also demanded that employment opportunities be provided for local unemployed in the industries set up in SEZs.
The TD president alleged that traders and the Congress leaders were hoarding fertilisers and added that farmers led by the party MLA, Devineni Umamaheswara Rao, unearthed fertilisers illegally stored in Vijayawada.
