HYDERABAD: For the second time this year, the Andhra Pradesh government released Krishna water to Chennai from Kandaleru reservoir of the Telugu Ganga project on Wednesday as a Sankranti gift to the residents of the city.
The sluices of Kandaleru in Nellore district were opened on the festival day to send out nearly 2,000 cusecs of water, out of which 800 cusecs was meant for Chennai. The balance of 1,200 cusecs is being used to provide irrigation to rabi crops in Nellore and Chittoor districts and supplement drinking water sources of Tirupati, Srikalahasti and other places en route.
The release of water was made following a fresh request made by the Tamil Nadu government which, indeed, did not want help from Telugu Ganga till recently in view of the copious inflows received by Poondi under the North-East monsoon, said M. Raja Reddy, liaison officer, Telugu Ganga project.
With the storage in Kandaleru being comfortable at 35 tmcft, the A.P. government has finalised a working-table to ensure 4 tmcft to Chennai now as sought by Tamil Nadu. With this, the quantity of water supplied to Chennai will be the highest this year at 8 tmcft as 4.4 tmcft was already released under the first instalment.
