Temple, mosque, pagoda renovation in the pipeline

The West Bengal state government is to begin renovating historical temples, mosques, pagodas and forts of archaeological value from April. Historic buildings in need of renovation will be selected by an eight-member committee appointed by the state archaeology directorate under the state information and cultural affairs department. So far, the committee has identified 27 such monuments in need of renovation from among the structures maintained by the directorate across the state, West Bengal. These include Bauxa Fort in Alipurduar, Jain temples in Puncha, Henry Martyn's Pagoda at Serampore, the Hussain Shahi Mosque in Ketugram, the temple of Radhagovinda at Antpur and Jangipara in Hooghly. The information and cultural affairs department principal secretary, Mr Dilip Chakraborty, said the 12th Finance Commission has allocated Rs 40 crore for conservation of heritage and monuments in West Bengal to be spent over four years, from 2006 to 2010.
