Tension prevailed at Kureepuzha in the city on Sunday over the issue of permitting eight trucks loaded with garbage to enter the garbage dumping yard there and unload.
City Corporation authorities said that residents of the area under the banner of Human Rights and Environment Protection Council had been blocking trucks since the past three days in violation of High Court orders.
Since the High Court orders had to be implemented, a huge posse of the police geared up to meet the situation. A section of the police force led by Assistant Commissioner B. Krishna Kumar moved to the dumping yard area in a move to use force, if necessary, to clear the way for the trucks to enter the yard.
The residents, including a large number of women, assembled in front of the yard leading to tension. But talks between police officers, Revenue Divisional Officer K. Salim, and Corporation authorities on one side and leaders of the council on the other led to the situation easing which resulted in the trucks being allowed to enter the yard.
As per the High Court directive, trucks could carry garbage into the yard and empty the contents under conditions. One of the conditions was that the contents should not contain any plastic materials. But residents pointed out that a major portion of the garbage brought by trucks were plastic carry bags.
The council leaders led by secretary Manalil Santosh and N. Nalinakshan told the authorities that the trucks contained material in violation of the court orders and that the Corporation authorities had not implemented any of provisions in the agreement which were reached during talks held earlier on the issue in the presence of Labour Minister Shibu Baby John.
Mr. Santosh said the residents did not block the trucks but raised objection to the plastic materials in the garbage brought by trucks. The authorities told the residents that since there was a six-week period to implement the court directive, they were in the process of implementing it. The Corporation authorities said from Monday, garbage would be brought to the yard only after segregating plastic materials. The Corporation authorities also agreed to comply with the other court stipulations within the six-week period.
