Tata Energy Research Institute (TERI) is all set to test a micro-organism (bug), developed and evolved from five different strains of bacteria, which could detoxify the 50,000 metric tons of sludge produced at Digboi oil refinery. Digboi is the oldest of the oil refineries and this toxic waste results due to the procedure followed since the time of the Britishers fro the recovery of superior quality wax from the curde oil. Apart from being non-biodegradable, the sludge has a high pH level due to the presence of high concentration of sulphuric acid.
