Environment and Natural Resources Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka said yesterday the volume of destruction caused by both terrorism and environmental hazards, is similar in the country. Addressing a function to mark the donation of financial aid to some selected local bodies under the Solid Waste Management Project, the Minister said that the separatist terrorism could be wiped out by July 27, 2009. Similarly, he said that the solid waste crisis could also be resolved by 2012 if the present programme was implemented successfully. He said that Rs.600 million would be spent for the solid waste management, and recycling plants would be established in the areas of Kalutara, Gampaha, Colombo, Anuradhapura and Kandy. Mr. Ranawaka said that all should be united in the fight against the environmental hazards transcending political barriers. He pointed out that 160,000 tons compost fertilizer could be produced by successfully recycling the present amount of garbage disposals.
